Generators

Generators

When the utility power supply fluctuates outside of a set tolerance, or fails completely a standby power system can automatically operate to provide power from fuel or stored power. The stored power usually comes from a UPS with lead acid batteries and the generated power from a diesel, petrol, natural gas or liquid petroleum gas (LPG) standby generator.

Generators

Having availability of emergency standby power is an essential requirement for any application where critical operations require an uninterrupted supply. This is a fundamental requirement for many industry areas such as data centres, hospitals, emergency services, telecoms and wherever business continuity must be ensured. When this need for power is required for prolonged periods of time, a generator becomes part of the solution.

An electric generator is a device that converts mechanical energy obtained from an engine supplied by an external source, such as diesel or gas, into electrical energy via an alternator. There are different sizes and power ratings associated with generators, they can be prime power rated (PPR), which is the maximum power that a generator can output 24/7 and standby power rated (SPR) which typically run slightly higher than the continuous rating but with a more limited run time. This and the size of fuel tanks used will determine the time that the set can power the load between refueling intervals. Generally as long as the set is well maintained and kept refueled it will happily run for most required durations.

It is therefore vital to get the right type and size of generator for the load type and existing infrastructure to prevent compatibility issues. An oversized set will be inefficient as they are not designed to run at low loads and an undersized set may falter and not even meet the expected operational requirements.

As approved ‘Gold Dealers’ for SDMO, we can offer a high quality and competitive range for both standard, rental and portable generator sets.  These can come with a variety of optional extras to cater for the majority of requirements, including bulk fuel tanks and transfer systems to telemetry for connection to a BMS (Building Management System). We can also design, supply and install bespoke systems including super silent generators, walk around canopies and marine specification sets with all the additional accessories, such as bulk fuel tanks that would be needed. We see any demanding specification as a challenge that we will find a solution to, working in partnership with our customers to provide the best all round solution for their needs.
