P & I pass Achilles UVDB Verify audit with 100%

AchillesFollowing a recent two-day Achilles UVDB Verify audit, we are proud to announce that we passed with 100%.

What is Achilles UVDB Verify?

“…an independent audit of an organisation’s Safety, Health, Environment, Quality (SHEQ) management systems and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).” *

This two-day audit was an Achilles UVDB Verify Category B2 audit which is specifically designed for large suppliers who provide works or services to the utilities sector.  The audit consisted of two parts, the first day concentrated on our head office in Havant to assess our Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) management systems. On day two, we were assessed on how well these systems are implemented on working sites.

Update on P & I’s COVID 19 operational, contingency & containment plan

Coronavirus COVID 19As a key supplier and maintainer of critical power for key infrastructure, P & I are an essential service and will therefore continue to operate under the current government guidelines.

P & I have put in place very stringent steps as part of our business continuity plan to ensure the readiness of the company to be able to deal with circumstances that could impact on business operations of both P & I and that of those we serve. Additional steps are now in place with specific regard to COVID 19 to make sure that everything possible is being done to prevent the risk of the virus in our workplace, prevent spread of the virus to the community whilst ensuring P & I remain operational throughout these unprecedented times.

All staff have been continually briefed and kept updated on the current guidelines, requirements, details of the virus and advice of standard hygiene precautions and prevention as detailed from PHE (Public Health England) and the NHS that must be adhered to.

All external and internal meetings and external parties visiting P & I remain suspended and meetings will only be carried out remotely by telephone / conference calls until authorised to stop by the senior management team.

All key staff capable of working remotely from home were fully set up to do so in order to continue working, this plan was implemented 2 weeks before the UK lockdown and is fully operational and proven as working successfully.

Essential staff that are required to continue to work in the office, workshops, yard and stores areas observe social distancing and remain isolated by more than 2 meters at all times to prevent risk of possible infection.

Non key members of staff will remain isolated at home as per government guidelines.

Communication channels will remain fully open through use of electronic media and by telephone.

Staff in all areas have access to hand washing facilities on all floors and kitchen areas and to additional sanitisers. Additional cleaning products have been made available to maintain a robust hygienic personal working environment, especially for personal items such as desks, keyboards, phone handsets etc or where the risk of any potential contamination may be higher through routine contact. Additional cleaning routines have been implemented across our offices including sterilisation with particular attention to those frequently used areas, such as door handles, desks and chairs and this will continue until authorised to stop by the senior management team.

All P & I engineers will work in strict compliance with social distancing, keeping a minimum of 2 meters apart from any other site personnel wherever possible. Where multiple engineers are required to work on a single site travel to and from those sites will be carried out individually in separate vehicles.

In order to comply with social distancing, apprentices will until further notice not be attending any sites with engineers.

All staff are rigorously following current government guidelines on social distancing and engineers will restrict as much as possible any contact with all site staff, other engineers or subcontractors while working on sites. The advice for standard hygiene precautions and prevention as detailed from PHE (Public Health England) and the NHS will be followed. Staff that arrive on any site must check that adequate protection is in place to prevent the possibility of infection and that no confirmed cases of COVID 19 have occurred at that site within 14 days. Where there is any additional risk identified or a doubt of safeguarding, our staff will notify P & I management who will provide guidance before any work on that site commences.

Engineers are issued with and will wear single use disposable gloves on arrival at site and safely dispose of gloves on leaving site. Hands will also be washed on departure from site to further reduce any risk of infection. Names of all persons that engineers have come into contact with will be recorded as a precautionary measure on the dynamic risk assessment completed by the engineer prior to work commencing.

Where symptoms of virus occur (persistent dry cough and or high temperature) staff will notify management and self-isolate for 7 days from start of when first felt ill. All named persons that were listed as having contact will be notified of this so that they can take suitable action to reduce any further risk of infection to the wider community.

In the event of any employee from P & I coming into contact with a known source of COVID 19, that member of staff will follow current government guidelines and will self-isolate for 14 days.

If any member of staff exhibits Coronavirus symptoms, they will notify their line manager immediately and seek immediate advice from the NHS online service. If then required, they will present themselves for PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing at their local hospital or location as advised by the NHS service. Line managers will then report any such occurrence to the senior management team.

If any member of staff is confirmed as having COVID 19 by testing PCR positive they will not be allowed to attend work and will be treated accordingly by medical services.

Staff members that have been in contact with any confirmed case of COVID 19 will also self-isolate as a precaution and directly follow advice from the NHS and senior management team at P & I.

Our supply chain partners are advised to follow all government guidelines immediately and to report any suspected contact incidents or any confirmed cases of COVID 19 directly by telephone to P & I head office.

Where any confirmed or suspected cases of COVID 19 are reported to have occurred on customer sites, P & I engineers will only attend that site if suitable and adequate precautions have been put in place by the site to prevent any possible cross contamination and potential infection of our staff and the wider community.

P & I welcome new service engineer

New Service EngineerOn Monday 9th March, P & I welcomed new service engineer, Peter Gorman, to the team.

Peter brings a huge amount of experience and knowledge to P & I, having spent over 30 years in the critical power industry. Peter has worked for some of the big names in the industry including Cummins, Caterpillar and Kohler.

For the last 25 years, Peter has worked in America as a field engineer and has taken part in various high profile projects including working within embassies, research centres in Antarctica and other government buildings in Washington, D.C.

Having completed his week-long induction with operations director, Alan Blair, Peter is now on the road assisting our customers. As a service engineer, Peter will fall under the leadership of service manager, Ashley Benfield, who commented:

“Peter is a highly skilled engineer with a huge amount of knowledge and experience within our industry. I would like to welcome Peter to the team and wish him every success for his future with P & I. He is going to be a real asset to the company and I look forward to working with him.”

P & I welcome purchase ledger administrator

Catalina - Purchase Ledger AdministratorOn Monday 3rd February, P & I welcomed purchase ledger administrator, Catalina Lachioiu, to the team.

Catalina joins us having completed her Business Administration Level 3 Apprenticeship with a former employer. Catalina has also completed her AAT Level 2 and is currently working towards her AAT Level 3 so the role within P & I’s accounts team was the perfect match.

Commenting on joining P & I, Catalina said:

“When I came in for my interview, I was really impressed with P & I and I could tell that this was a great environment for developing my career. The position was exactly the type of role I was looking for to begin my career in accounting. I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone and working with the rest of the accounts team.”

Having completed her week-long induction with line manager, Alan Blair, Catalina is now learning the ropes from purchase ledger & administration manager, Nikki Cushion.

P & I team member celebrates 10 years’ service

10 Years' ServiceOn Friday 16th August, we celebrated Matt Driver’s 10 years’ service with P & I. Matt was joined by his colleagues for a presentation and received a bottle of champagne, a box of chocolates, an extra day’s holiday and a cheque for £100 to mark his 10-year milestone with the company. 

Matt joined us in 2009 as an electrical engineer and in April 2017, he was promoted to site supervisor. The promotion saw Matt become an integral part of the projects team. Matt’s role involves him supervising all site installation work for projects, undertaking site surveys and ensuring that electrical testing is carried out correctly. 

Matt becomes yet another member of staff to join the ever-growing list of employees who have reached their 10-year anniversary. The current list includes Ashley Benfield, Martin Woodham, Dave Lawty and Jon Terzza. 

Commenting on his 10-year milestoneMatt said: 

The last 10 years has flown by; I can still remember my very first day. I have seen P & I grow from a handful of staff, to what it is today and it has been a pleasure to be part of that growth. I would like to thank both Paul and Paul for their continued support during my time with P & I. I look forward to many more years to come.”

P & I welcome three new service engineers

New Service EngineersOver the last two months, P & I have welcomed three new service engineers to the team, Felix Anokye, James Dean and Len Hardie.

Both Felix and James joined us on Tuesday 28th May and completed their week-long induction with operations director, Alan Blair.

Felix has been in the critical power industry for the last 9 years, working in various roles based in Ghana. Working his way from service engineer to team lead and then on to regional supervisor, Felix joins us with a great background from within the industry.

Commenting on joining P & I, Felix said:

“When I read about P & I, I found that my skills matched their requirements so it seemed like a perfect fit. The role allows me to showcase my technical skills and knowledge, whilst gaining further experience. It’s a great privilege to work for such a reputable company and be a part of their growth. I look forward to progressing within P & I and adding to my skill set.”

James joined P & I alongside Felix and brings 10 years’ experience from within the critical power industry, to the role. Beginning his career, in 2009, as an apprentice engineer with a fellow critical power company, James has continued his journey within the industry and has also worked for a Fortune 500 company.

James commented:

“The role was exactly what I was looking for and I actually knew quite a few members of staff from previous roles I had held. I’m looking forward to working with some familiar faces again and seeing how I progress through P & I.”

Finally, on Tuesday 9th July, Len joined us.

Len has spent the last 30 years’ working within the critical power industry and joins us with experience in both generators and UPS. Due to his wealth of knowledge and experience, Len joins us as a senior service engineer.

Having recently completed his week-long induction, Len is now out on the road assisting P & I’s customers.

Felix, James and Len will all fall under the leadership of service manager, Ashley Benfield. Commenting on the arrival of three new engineers, Ashley said:

“This is an exciting time for P & I as we continue to expand. I am very pleased to welcome three new engineers to our team, in such a short amount of time. I would like to wish them all every success for their future with us and I look forward to working with them.”

P & I welcome electrical design engineer

Electrical Design EngineerOn Monday 11th March, P & I welcomed electrical design engineer, Vikki Ford, to the team.

Having worked throughout the years, in both the critical power industry and the fire protection industry, Vikki has extensive experience as an electrical design engineer. Vikki is a familiar face to many at P & I, following her days at Dawson-Keith, where she worked with a number of current P & I staff members. P & I’s managing director, Paul Benfield, is an ex-Dawson-Keith employee and created P & I following Dawson-Keith’s relocation to the North of England.

Having completed P & I’s induction training, Vikki is now learning the ropes from her colleagues in the design department. As part of our design team, Vikki will fall under the leadership of design and development manager, David Allen.

David commented:

“This is a really exciting time for the design department, within the last six months, we have taken on two new design engineers to support the design requirement of the work coming into P & I. Vikki is a welcomed addition to the team and with her extensive background in electrical design, she is going to be a huge asset to the team. I look forward to working with Vikki and wish her every success for her future with P & I.”

P & I respond to Storm Gareth

Storm GarethLast week, Storm Gareth hit the UK bringing gale force winds and heavy rain. Storm Gareth is the third storm to be named this year, after Erik in February and Freya earlier this month.

The Met Office had various yellow weather warnings in place throughout the UK for strong winds and heavy rain. The storm caused travel disruption, power cuts and damage to buildings across the country.

In the event of bad weather like this, businesses may need to hire emergency generators to ensure their business continuity. Having to close your business due to a power cut caused by bad weather, can be very costly. We thought we would put together a handful of cases from last week, showing how we kept our customers businesses running during the storm:

On Tuesday 12th March at 10am, we received a call from one of our customers who wanted to hire four generators for their four water booster sites. All sites had power, however, our customer wanted to ensure business continuity for the duration of the storm. P & I supplied a 1250kVA, 800kVA, 550kVA and a 500kVA with unlimited running and fuel management to all four sites.

Our service coordinator, James Dodd, jumped straight into action and quoted our customer for the hire of the four generators including installation. We were given the go ahead at around 11am and all sets arrived onsite in Kent at 2.30pm. Our engineers got to work installing the generators at each of the sites, with the 550kVA site requiring a cable run of 75 metres. By 5pm all sites were up and running.

Other emergency installs on that day included, the supply of a 275kVA standby hire generator to Faversham and 100kVA standby hire generator to Southwick, both wired in for automatic start.

On top of that, we attended 6 emergency breakdowns, where our highly skilled engineers had all generators operational by the time they left site.

P & I apprentice takes part in Honda Training

HondaIn January, our second-year apprentice, Connor Jones, attended one of Honda’s three-day industrial training courses.

Throughout the three-day course, Connor completed the following training:

  • Overview of the Honda generator range
  • Different types of generators
  • Load bank testing
  • Basic electrics
  • Correct use of a multi-meter
  • Principles behind generating electricity
  • Ohms Law and Power Triangle
  • Generator servicing
  • Carburettor removal, strip, rebuild and re-fit
  • Electrical troubleshooting Honda generators
  • Sales technical training

Connor commented:

“I really enjoyed my time on the Honda course. We had such informative instructors, who didn’t just go through the theory, they showed us how to do things practically. We were taken through the full Honda range and had the opportunity to take the generators apart. I think all the information and the practical sessions are really going to help me moving forward.”

Senior Area Sales Manager for Honda Industrial, Steve Jeffcock, commented:

“I have worked with P & I for many years and they are one of our Honda Authorised Dealers. It’s great to see the investment P & I put into the training and development of their apprentices. Connor did really well throughout the training, I hope he can put everything he has learnt to good use and it will help him with his apprenticeship.”

For successfully completing the course, Connor received a certificate from the Honda team.

P & I talk about what they are doing to prepare for Brexit

BrexitUnless you have been hiding under a rock for nearly three years, you will know that on Thursday 23rd June 2016, the UK voted to leave the European Union (EU). To follow the process of leaving, Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty was triggered back in March 2017, giving both the UK and EU, two years to agree on the term of our ‘divorce’.

On Friday 29th March at 11pm (UK time), the UK will leave the EU with or without a deal, so we interviewed service manager, Ashley Benfield, to find out what P & I are doing in the build up to the UK’s departure.

What do you think could be the biggest impact of Brexit on the critical power industry?

For anyone in our industry, we would be looking at a potential impact on lead times for critical spares from the EU. Purchasing new equipment could also see extended lead times and potential price increases, as the majority of suppliers are based in Europe. We have already seen prices rise in the build up to Brexit so it is highly likely, these prices will continue to rise after Brexit.

Do you have a business continuity plan in place, in the event of a hard Brexit?

Yes, we have been actively increasing our stock holdings of common parts, to reduce the impact of lead times for our customers. We have been assisting our customers with their business continuity plans for Brexit, by advising them to carry out testing. This will allow P & I to solve any equipment issues before we leave the EU.

Do P & I purchase goods from Europe?

Nearly all of the spare parts we purchase are obtained from the UK, however, having audited our supply chain, we found that all major distribution hubs are in Europe. As discussed in the first question, capital equipment like new generators are supplied from within the EU so we could see a potential impact on lead times and prices moving forward.

What plans do P & I have to alleviate the impact of Brexit?

Due to the potential disruption that the European hubs could cause, as mentioned in a previous question, we have been stockpiling common parts in our warehouse from multiple suppliers we have relationships with. We do not believe that we can do much more to ease the potential problem.

In the event of a ‘No Deal’ Brexit, will P & I still be able to fulfil their contractual duties to their customers?

Yes, a ‘No Deal’ Brexit would not impact our engineers from carrying out normal service work. There could potentially be delays for those customers purchasing hardware, however, this shouldn’t be an issue for P & I as all of our major suppliers have warehouses in the UK.

What advice would you give your customers in the build up to Brexit?

I would advise our customers to do the following:

  • Test your equipment,so any issues can be resolved prior to us leaving the EU. We would strongly recommend this was a black start test, which simulates a real-life mains fail.
  • Fill your diesel tanks to their maximum to prepare for potential issues with price fluctuations and availability. It will also allow formaximum run time in the event of a power failure.
  • Consider rental generators for high level critical sites, for example, sites that pose a risk to life or environmental issues, in the event of a power outage. This would be a preventative measure, should the worst happen with Brexit.

P & I welcome three new service engineers

New Service Engineers

During January and February, we have welcomed three new service engineers to the team, Ian Sherwood, Ubay Sohail and Mark Mills.

Ian was the first to joined us on Monday 7th January, having spent the last 10 years working for a banknote and passport manufacturer. Completing his Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering with the company, Ian went on to become one of their mechanical maintenance engineers.

With a strong mechanical engineering background, Ian decided he wanted a change of scenery and industry, commenting:

“I have always been interested in critical power and would like to develop my electrical skills and qualifications, P & I seemed to be a good fit to allow me to achieve this. I have always worked at one site and this role allows me to travel, also the company being a family business, attracted me to the role.

So far, everyone at the company has been friendly and welcoming. I am enjoying the job and I look forward to progressing within the company and adding to my skill set. Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome!”

Ubay was the next to join us on Monday 21st January. Having completed a Masters in Marine Engineering, Ubay has spent the last 4 years in the marine industry, working for both a multinational defence, security, and aerospace company and a maritime charity.

Ubay commented:

“Having worked for a large organisation and a charity, I was looking to join a small local business. With my previous roles, I spent a lot of time away on-board ships so I wanted to find something based on land, but not office based. The field service engineer role seemed like the perfect fit and my skill set from the marine industry is definitely transferable to the critical power industry. I am enjoying the role so far and it is giving me the challenge I was looking for.”

Finally, on Monday 4th February, Mark joined us.

Mark has over 20 years’ experience working with diesel engines and has spent the last year and a half in the critical power industry.

Mark commented:

“Having spent the last year and a half working on generator equipment, I wanted to further my skill set in other aspects of critical power. I was attracted to the role at P & I because they aren’t just a generator service company so I knew there would be the opportunity to learn more about the installation and UPS side of the business, which interests me. I also liked the fact they are a family run business.”

P & I employee completes apprenticeship

Nathan Apprenticeship CompletionCongratulations to Nathan Jackett who has recently completed his Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship with P & I.

Nathan joined P & I in June 2018 as a service control apprentice and was employed via P & I’s apprenticeship partner, PETA. PETA Ltd is a Hampshire-based training organisation set up in 1970 and is owned by over 330-member companies including Portsmouth Water, Stannah Stairlifts, Wightlink, Portsmouth International Port, Kenwood, Airbus, Boeing and many others.

Nathan commented:

“I’m not going to lie, completing my apprenticeship wasn’t easy but I was determined. I was very lucky to have such supportive colleagues who would help and guide me when I needed it. I have to say a huge thank you to my line manager, Ashley Benfield, for all of his support and guidance. I’m really looking forward to my future with P & I.”

As part of Nathan’s apprenticeship, he spent four days a week in the office carrying out on the job training, with one-day release to attend PETA’s Business Training Centre. During the one-day release, Nathan would complete the classroom-based part of his apprenticeship.

Dean Curry, Trainer Assessor within Business Training at PETA Ltd, commented:

“Nathan did really well passing his Level 3 Business Administration Diploma. When Nathan started, he had little work experience or industry knowledge and had a steep learning curve which was challenging at times for him. The same can be said for the Business Diploma and Level 2 Functional Skills Math, in particular.

However, with some hard work from Nathan, support and motivation from his line manager, Ashley and his colleagues, Nathan has achieved. He should be proud of himself and also grateful for being with an employer with a clear interest in giving people a chance and developing them.”

Commenting on Nathan’s achievement, Ashley said:

“I am so pleased for Nathan, it’s not been easy for him but he remained dedicated to his apprenticeship. It’s a great feeling as a line manager to see my staff develop and grow during their time with the company. Throughout Nathan’s apprenticeship, he has maintained a great attitude and has come a long way since his very first day with us. I’m looking forward to seeing how Nathan’s career develops and proud that P & I were a part of it.”
